Anduril and surrounding worlds[ᚱ]
|
Anduril (AAB entry ; Phill's Canon entry ; Foreven entry ): a Sword World, one of the Far Colonies, named for an ancient Old Terran fictional sword.
Anduril is located on the Sword Worlds Main, the second to last world of the Far Leg, core-trailward from Narsil.
One of the Sword Worlds settled from Sacnoth, Anduril remains linked to Sacnoth culturally, economically and politically. Unlike the other Far Colonies, Anduril was colonized not in a single, coordinated effort but rather by several different groups — including some from Gram — who were eager to establish their own, distinct communities. Anduril was balkanized for most of its history with the first single, central authority only established recently by the Dominate.
Anduril has a good quality starport (B) with refined fuel available, starship maintenance facilities able to repair any damage and shipyards capable of constructing non-starships. There are no orbital facilities but a substantial downport exists at Roheryn Landings at the starport are virtually impossible during the semi-annual windy seasons.
Anduril is a large size (9) world with a diameter of 15,232 kilometres and surface gravity of 1.52G, which is fatiguing for off-worlders used to more moderate gravity. (GT01, p. 69; GT31, p. 24) It has a dense, oxygen-nitrogen mix atmosphere (8) and a normal climate with average temperatures between 22 °C and 29 °C, though weather can be severe due to the world's energetic star and substantial axial tilt (53°). (GT01, p. 69; GT31, pp. 24, 35; GT05, p. 75) Anduril has a wet hydrosphere (5) with water covering 49% of its surface. (GT01, p. 69; GT31, p. 24)
Anduril has a moderate-sized population (5) of approximately seven hundred thousand, most of which consists of many settlements scattered across the world's surface, though the city of Greyhaven has grown since the Dominate established the capital there.
Anduril is governed by a feudal technocracy (5) with many independent holdings now nominally in fief to the Dominate Kejser who reigns as Konge of Anduril. A Governor-General administers Dominate affairs from Dominate House at Greyhaven. Law enforcement is generally moderate (7) though it can vary rather widely across the world's many domains.
Anduril has early stellar technological capability (A), among the highest in the Sword Worlds outside of Sacnoth, Gram and Hofud. Some areas of Anduril have only been superficially explored. (MT5, p. 34) It is an agricultural and non-industrial world and a member of the Sacnoth Dominate.

Dyrnwyn and surrounding worlds[ᚹ]
|
Dyrnwyn (AAB entry ; Phill's Canon entry ; Foreven entry ): a Sword World, one of the New Colonies, named for an ancient Old Terran legendary sword.
Dyrnwyn is located on the Sword Worlds Main, the last world on the Dyrnwyn Spur, coreward from Durendal.
Originally settled from Gram, Dyrnwyn is now more closely linked to Hofud culturally, economically and politically, especially due to its relatively remote location at the end of the Dyrnwyn Spur. Like Hofud, Dyrnwyn is careful to acknowledge the suzerainty of Sacnoth but, also like Hofud, it continues to use pre-Dominate titles for its nobles and pre-Dominate ranks for officers in its Home Guard.
Dyrnwyn has a routine quality starport (C) at Kettles with unrefined fuel available (from the nearby ocean) and starship maintenance facilities able to repair major damage.
Dyrnwyn is a large size (9) world with a diameter of 15,422 kilometres and surface gravity of 1.2G. (GT01, p. 71; GT31, p. 24) It has a thin, oxygen-nitrogen atmosphere (5) and a very cold (icy) climate with average temperatures between -23 °C and -13 °C, though in the region around the "hot pole" — at the centre of the sunward facing hemisphere — the climate approaches normal (with average temperatures between 22 °C and 29 °C). (GT01, p. 71; GT31, p. 24; GT05, p. 75) Dyrnwyn has a wet hydrosphere (8) with water covering 76% of its surface, most of which is ice-covered most of the time, other than in the region around the "hot pole." (GT01, p. 71; GT31, pp. 24, 49)
Dyrnwyn has a moderate-sized population (5) of approximately five hundred thousand, most of which is concentrated on the islands of the Sunwarmed Sea and on the Sea's coastline along the northern coast of Sharp.
Like most of the Sword Worlds, Dyrnwyn is governed by a feudal technocracy (5). Each domain is ruled by a feudal landholder or magnate, each with a variety of subordinate fief-holders tied to them via complex and diverse feudal techno-economic relationships. (An independent Governor-General administers Dominate affairs from Dominate House at Kettles.) Dyrnwyn has moderate law enforcement (7) which is fairly uniform given the concentration of most of the world's population around the "hot pole."
Dyrnwyn has early stellar technological capability (A). Some areas of Dyrnwyn have only been superficially explored, especially ice-covered undersea areas of the world ocean. (MT5, p. 34) It is an agricultural and non-industrial, world and a member of the Sacnoth Dominate.
Dyrnwyn world map[ᚺ]
The Dyrnwyn system's primary star, Rhydderch, is an orange dwarf (K4V) which has a red dwarf (M8V) companion star, Gwydion. The system has seven worlds, including a gas giant but no planetoid belt.
Dyrnwyn orbits Rhydderch at just over four light-minutes, along the outer edge of the star's habitable zone and is tidally-locked to its primary. (GT31, pp. 24, 49) The world has no moon. (GT31, p. 24)
Dyrnwyn Spur (Sagamaal: Dyrnwynspore): the trace of worlds trail-coreward from Beater to Dyrnwyn. (GT31, p. 99)

Entrope and surrounding worlds[ᛉ]
|
Entrope (AAB entry ; Phill's Canon entry ; Foreven entry ): originally settled by ancient Darrians, the abandoned colony on Entrope managed to survive the collapse of ancient Darrian interstellar civilization which followed the mysterious Maghiz, though initially with substantial civilizational regression. More recently, Entrope once again finds itself linked to the Darrians culturally, economically and politically but is careful to maintain its formal independence.
Ansehelm and Wynstan have been settled by the Entropeans, with material and technological assistance from the Darrians. In recent decades, Entrope has also been exiling dangerous criminals — and political dissidents — to Irka. (GJ0829, "The Sword Worlders"; GBJ1, p. 40)
Entrope is located in a cluster of worlds spin-coreward from the Horseshoe, connecting at Hrunting with the Sword Worlds Main.

(GJ0829, "The Sword Worlders"; GBJ1, p. 40)[ᚠ]
Eriksen (Tarsus ): world along the spinward spur of the rimward trace of the Pilgrim frontier main, named for a member of the first Dominate expedition to survey the world. (M1, p. 11; GJ0725, "The Sacnoth Dominate"; Phill's Canon) (There are not ruins but biological evidence of an ancient Darrian settlement on Tarsus which was not discovered in the initial Dominate survey. (M1, p. 11))
Erl: the smallest of the three continents on Sacnoth, sitting astride the equator and separated from Arathrion to the south by a mountain range and from Eisufer to the east by an equatorial isthmus. Central Erl is the most heavily settled region on the planet and is the location of the capital, Førstebjerg. The continent is named for a domain in another work of fiction by the same ancient Old Terran author of the work from which Sacnoth's name is drawn. (GT31, p. 56)
escort: a gunboat or warship without a spinal mount weapon. See corvette, destroyer and frigate.
Escort: one of the two main continents on Hofud, located mostly in the southern hemisphere but also reaching across the equator into the northern hemisphere at one point. (Called "Baaten" — Sagamaal for "escort boat" — in the Classic Traveller era; GT31, p. 60)
Evariidi: a large feudal holding on Isenfang. (GJ1508, "Psi-chiatrist")
Excalibur and surrounding worlds[ᚽ]
|
Excalibur (AAB entry ; Phill's Canon ; Foreven entry ): a Sword World, one of the New Colonies, named for an ancient Old Terran legendary sword.
Excalibur is located on the Sword Worlds Main, the next world rim-spinward from Sacnoth along the Far Leg, core-trailward from Orcrist and the other Far Colonies.
Originally settled from Gram, Excalibur has come to be influenced culturally, economically and politically by Sacnoth. Under the Dominate, Excalibur has adopted Dominate titles for its nobility and Dominate naval and army ranks for its Home Guard.
Excalibur has a routine quality starport (C) at Fastport, with unrefined fuel available (from the nearby sea) and starship maintenance facilities able to repair major damage.
Excalibur is a small size (4) world with a diameter of 4862 kilometres and surface gravity of 0.54G. (GT01, p. 70; GT31, p. 50) It has a very thin, oxygen-nitrogen mix atmosphere (2) tainted with volcanic gas and ash, which requires a filter-respirator for breathing, and a cool climate with average temperatures between 11 °C and 21 °C. (GT01, p. 70; GT31, p. 50; GT05, p. 75) Excalibur has a wet hydrosphere (4) with water covering 36% of its surface. (GT01, p. 70; GT31, p. 50)
Excalibur has a moderate-sized population (5) of approximately two hundred thousand, is, like most Sword Worlds, governed by a feudal technocracy (5) with moderate law enforcement (7) which can very across the many settlements and holdings scattered across the planet.
Excalibur has pre-stellar technological capability (8). Some areas of Excalibur have only been superficially explored. (MT5, p. 34) It is a non-industrial world and a member of the Sacnoth Dominate.
Excalibur world map[ᚾ]
The Excalibur system's only star, Artur, is an orange dwarf (K5V). The system has ten worlds, including two gas giants and no planetoid belt.
Excalibur orbits Artur at nearly 150 light-seconds, within the star's habitable zone but also resonantly locked to the star, rotating three times every two orbits. (GT31, pp. 50, 53) These unusual circumstances have produced several species of primitive fauna — collectively known as "striders" — which are continually making their way around the world's southern hemisphere, following the sunrise — or in some cases the sunset — terminator line along a remarkable, world-spanning migration route in the mid-latitudes of the major continent. (GT31, p. 53)
Excalibur has three small moons, the largest of which, Bedwyr, seems to be a captured body which has some mystifying, ancient ruins that are older and seem to be of a different nature from the ancient Darrian ruins discovered on Excalibur itself. (GT01, p. 70; GT31, pp. 52, 54)

It is separated from Greatland, the other large continent, by the Inland Sea. Forestmarch's eastern coast is one of the more heavily settled regions of the world. The continent is named for its heavily forested interior, the largest such region on the world, made possible by the high mountains on its western coast which provide some protection from the world's heavy seasonal winds. (Called "Forstermark" — Sagamaal for "Greatland" — in the Classic Traveller era; GT31, p. 35)
Forlade (Avastan ): world on the spinward spur of the rimward trace of the Pilgrim frontier main, surveyed by the Guerreiro Expedition; named because it was the farthest point reached by Dominate explorers in that region of the Pilgrim frontier. (Phill's Canon)

The Gram now serves as a core element of Gram Station, the orbital highport component of Gram's starport.
Gram and surrounding worlds[ᚩ]
|
Gram (world; AAB entry ; Phill's Canon entry ; Foreven entry ; Jones' MT entry ): the original Sword World settled in 1 F.E., named for the Gram, flagship of the fleet which brought the Founders to the world.
Gram is located on the Sword Worlds Main rim-trailward from Joyeuse and core-spinward from Tyrfing, at the juncture of the Horseshoe and the Far Leg.
Gram was the most prominent Sword World for more than two centuries, the source of the original settlement of the First Colonies, the New Colonies and the Horseshoe Colonies. The Gram Hegemony prevailed throughout the Sword Worlds until The Mutiny, when it was supplanted by the political dominance of the Sacnoth Dominate.
Gram remains one of the most populous and technologically-advanced worlds in the Dominate and its cultural, economic and political influence endures throughout most of the worlds of the Horseshoe.
Gram has an excellent quality starport (A) with plentiful refined fuel and extensive shipyards offering starship repair and maintenance and also able to build the most sophisticated starships in the Dominate. There are both orbital and ground components of the starport. The highport, Gram Station, in a geosynchronous orbit above the downport, is built around the Founders' original warship Gram. The downport, Hansen's Landing, is located on the opposite shore of the Sunny Strait from Gram's capital city, New Kalmar.
Gram is a large size (8) world with a diameter of 12,767 kilometres and surface gravity of 1.09G. (GT01, p. 70; GT31, p. 24) It has a dense, oxygen-nitrogen mix atmosphere (8) and normal climate, with average temperatures between 22 °C and 29 °C. (GT01, p. 70; GT31, p. 24; GT05, p. 75) The "cloud-veil," an enduring weather phenomenon caused by dust lifted into the dense atmosphere, makes an unclouded view of the daytime sun or the nighttime stars a very rare — and unpredictable — event. Gram has a wet hydrosphere (5) with water covering 55% of its surface. (GT01, p. 70; GT31, p. 24)
Gram has an extensive ecosystem, with complex native flora and fauna, which was conducive to the introduction of Terran flora and fauna. The atmosphere is dense but breathable and because most of the interior of Midgaard, the single large, sprawling super-continent which covers one entire hemisphere, is desert, the coastlands host most of the world's inhabitants.
Gram has a moderate-sized population (6) of approximately three million. The world's capital city, New Kalmar, on the west equatorial coast of the supercontinent Midgaard, is by far those most populous city at approximately 400,000.
Gram's government is a traditional feudal technocracy (5) with a hereditary planetary monarch — Hertug — exercising executive authority at the pinnacle of the industrial and landed nobility. (The original Hertug was installed by the Sacnoth Dominate, displacing the reigning Admiral and the traditional monarchy that had ruled since the Founding Era.) Sacnoth Dominate authority on Gram is represented by a Governor-General who is formally identified as an "advisor" to the Hertug but in truth executes direction from the Dominate government. Nevertheless, the Dominate is careful not to trample on Gram's autonomy in internal affairs. The Hertug is also advised by the Muster, a tricameral legislative body comprised of the Commissioned Corps (capital-holding nobles), the Enlisted Corps (professionals, technicians and tradespeople) and the Civilian Corps (unskilled, non-property-holding citizens). Judicial authority rests with a series of feudal tribunals appointed by the ruling noble in each domain. Gram is a member of the Sacnoth Dominate.
Gram has moderate law enforcement (7) though this can very somewhat across local domains. Weapons restrictions are generally low (4), with light assault weapons and energy weapons restricted. Both trade regulations (3) and civil restrictions (3) are generally low. Criminal restrictions (9) can be high but there are few restrictions on personal freedoms (3).
Gram has average stellar technological capability (C) with fusion and advanced fuel cells; Model/6 computers and low autonomous robots; real-time multilingual translators; broad-spectrum antitoxins and enhanced prosthetics; major terraforming and advanced weather control; personal grav belts and light gravitic modules; jump-3 starships; portable plasma guns and Gauss rifles, fusion guns, superdense armor and nuclear dampers; and jump-4 starship prototypes. (MT5, pp. 26-34)
Gram is a rich, non-industrial, agricultural world. Primary natural resources exported are agricultural products, ores and radioactives and the primary processed resources for export are agroproducts. While it has stretched its industrial capabilities in starship production and related technologies like computers and gravitics — which are ubiquitous throughout the Horseshoe — Gram does not substantially produce other manufactured goods for off-world trade. Indeed, Gram imports many industrial goods from Colada and Joyeuse.
Gram world map[ᚫ]
The Gram system's primary star, Sigurd, is a yellow-white dwarf (F2V) which has a red dwarf (M2V) companion star, Sigmund. The system has ten worlds, including three gas giants, and no planetoid belt.
Gram orbits Sigurd at 33 light-minutes, at the furthermost edge of the star's habitable zone. (GT31, p. 24)
Gram Hegemony: period from the Founding to The Mutiny / Unshackling when Gram served as the de facto leader of the Sword Worlds. Gram's leadership position had not been established in any formal manner but was generally recognized as the result of it being the political, social, economic, cultural and technological center of Sword Worlds society.
Gram Home Guard: armed forces of Gram, established in the aftermath of defeat by Sacnoth in The Mutiny / Unshackling. As a condition of the armistice which ended hostilities, Sacnoth demanded that Gram's expeditionary planetary and space forces be decommissioned. (In practice, many of the Gram units deployed to other Sword Worlds — primarily the First Colonies and the Horseshoe Colonies — became cadres, albeit at greatly-reduced strength, for the formation of local units on those worlds.) The former Gram planetary and space forces, also greatly-reduced in strength, were restructured as the Home Guard with operations restricted to the Gram system.
Gram Station: orbital station above Gram, built around the Gram — the troop transport that originally carried the Sword Worlder ancestors to Gram. The station is becomming a bewildering three-dimensional maze. From the very beginning, the Gram has been used as an orbital station. As it has grown too small, new sections have been added as needed, but the station has grown with little overall planning. (GJ2723, "The Five States"; GJ4316, "Old Gram Station"; GT31, p. 94)
Greatland: one of two large continents on Anduril which stretches from its western reaches in the southern hemisphere to its eastern reaches in the northern hemisphere. It is separated from Forestmarch, the other large continent, by the Inland Sea. Greatland's western coast is one of the more heavily settled regions of the world; the capital city, Greyhaven, is located there on the section north of the equator. (Called "Adlerland" — Sagamaal for "Greatland" — in the Classic Traveller era; GT31, p. 35)
Greyhaven: The capital city of Anduril, named for an ancient Old Terran legendary place related to the sword Anduril, located on the western equatorial coast of Greatland. (Called "Graahavne" — Sagamaal for "Greyhaven" — in the Classic Traveller era; GT31, pp. 34, 35)
Greve (Sagamaal): fourth rank noble title in the Sacnoth Dominate (grevidne is the female title). The holding of a greve is a grevedømme.
Grimes (Maitz ): unsettled world along the trailing trace of the Sepireld frontier main, farthest world surveyed by the Werlauff Expedition; named for an expedition officer who became a merchant adventurer upon return to the Dominate. (Phill's Canon)
Guan Yu-class cutter: a 200-ton, tech level B (Type EG) corvette designed for regular naval operations and built at shipyards on Hofud. (A04, p. 15) An older class of ships nearing the end of their planned service lives, Guan Yu-class cutter sometimes participated in private Exploring Expeditions. See Meteor-class cutter and Pilothval-class cutter.
Guard Sea: small, interior sea in the equatorial region of the Soleland continent on Excalibur. (Called "Hærvatten" — Sagamaal for "Military Sea" — in the Classic Traveller era; GT31, map, p. 53)
Gullinbursti (Talos ): world along the rimward trace of the Pilgrim frontier, named for a mythological artificial being. (Phill's Canon)
gunboat: a non-jump-capable ship intended for combat. See capital boat, escort and carrier.
Gwydion: The red dwarf (M8V) companion star of the Dyrnwyn system, named for an ancient Old Terran mythological figure. (GT31, p. 24; SMSS) Also see Rhydderch.
Gyllir (D'Ganzio ): world in the Danuuz frontier (and, later, the Ginnungagap rift), surveyed by the Kruhl Adventure, named for an ancient Old Terran mythological creature. (Phill's Canon)

Halef (Derchon ): unsettled world along the Sepireld frontier main, surveyed by the Namsmann Expedition, named for a legendary ancient Old Terran sword. (HRM980630; Phill's Canon)
Hanne Marendottir Braga: Empress (Sagamaal: Kejserinde) of the Sacnoth Dominate.
Hansen's Landing: city on Gram and location of the world's primary starport; named for Commander Flemming Hansen, a shuttle pilot who was the first member of original Gram crew to set foot on the world. Hansen's Landing lies on the western coast of the Sunny Strait, 1300 miles due west of New Kalmar. (GJ2723, "The Five States"; GT31, pp. 47, 48-49, 88)
Hart (Choleosti ): world in the Danuuz frontier, surveyed by the Badawi Adventure, named for one of the ships of the expedition. (MAFW; GJ8701, "Adventures On Choleosti"; Phill's Canon)
hauler: a non-jump-capable freighter.
Haulteclere (AAB entry ; Phill's Canon entry ; Foreven entry ; Jones' MT entry ): a Sword World, one of the Horseshoe Colonies originally settled from Gram, named for a legendary ancient Old Terran sword. (HRM980630) Haulteclere is a medium size (5) world with a very thin atmosphere (3) and a negligible hydrosphere (0). It has a moderate-size population (4) and is governed by a feudal technocracy (5) with moderate law enforcement (7). Haulteclere has a poor quality starport (D) and pre-stellar technological capability (8).
Hauptmann (Sagamaal): senior junior officer rank in the Sacnoth Dominate Army.
Hearth Sea: major ocean in the southern hemisphere of Joyeuse, reaching into the polar region in the south and bordered by Austrasia to the northwest, Aquitaine to the north and Neustria to the south. (Called "Hestilsvaten" in the Classic Traveller era; GT31, map, p. 39) While much of the Hearth Sea is covered with polar ice most of the year, the northern equatorial coast is generally ice-free throughout the year.
Heibergvindkraft: wind-power and hydroelectric energy generating grevedømme on Anduril.
Heodening: the primitive, non-human sophonts on Dainslaf. (GT01, pp. 33, 65-66) Most Sword Worlders treat Heodening as barbarians. Their name is derived from the same legendary source as the name of the world. A small number of Heodening have managed to travel off-world, visiting the Sword Worlds and joining other expeditions and ventures in the various frontiers. See "Non-Humans in Sacnoth Dominate Space," by Professor Rorik Vestason Raaby of the University of Ny Kalmar.
Hertug (Sagamaal): second rank noble title in the Sacnoth Dominate. In practice, because all titles of Konge are held by the Kejser, the Hertug is often the senior noble on a given world. The holding of a hertug is a hertugdømme.
Hikawamaru-class galleon: a 1000-ton, tech level C (Type ML) galleon built at the Anchorage Spacedock shipyards on Hofud and operated by Hofud Priority Starlines. (MCS, pp. 4-6) The Hikawamaru-class galleons are state-of-the-art for commercial passenger travel. See Admiral Maja II-class galleon and Leótrískt-class galleon.
Hindmout: city on Joyeuse, capital of the lientenancy of Brunhild, on the northeast coast of the Eaglewood Sea.
Hoding (Dawnworld ): world along the rimward trace of the Pilgrim frontier, surveyed by the Damsgaard Expedition, named for a legendary ancient Old Terran sword. (HRM980630 "Hothing"; GJ0725, "The Sacnoth Dominate"; GT31, pp. 11, 83; Phill's Canon) (There are ruins of an ancient Darrian settlement on Hoding which were not discovered in the initial Dominate survey. (AM08, p. 11, 24))
Hofud and surrounding worlds[ᚰ]
|
Hofud (AAB entry ; Phill's Canon entry ; Foreven entry ): a Sword World, one of the New Colonies, named for an ancient Old Terran mythological sword.
Hofud is located on the Sword Worlds Main, the first world along the Dyrnwyn Spur, rimward from Durendal and core-trailward from the Rim Stars Beater and Sting.
Hofud is one of the most powerful and influential Sword Worlds, having successfully managed to chart a course mostly independent of the influence of Sacnoth and Gram. Hofud is careful to acknowledge the suzerainty of Sacnoth but, like Gram, continues to use pre-Dominate titles for its nobles and pre-Dominate ranks for officers in its Home Guard. At the same time, the cultural, economic and political influence of Hofud is apparent throughout the Dyrnwyn Spur and increasingly among the Rim Colonies.
Hofud has an excellent quality starport (A) with plentiful refined fuel and extensive shipyards offering starship repair and maintenance and also able to build the most sophisticated starships in the Dominate. There are both orbital and ground components of the starport at Anchorage.
Hofud is a medium size (6) world with a diameter of 9789 kilometres and surface gravity of 0.75G. (GT01, p. 72; GT31, p. 50) It has a standard, oxygen-nitrogen mix atmosphere (6) and a normal climate, with average temperatures between 22 °C and 29 °C. (GT01, p. 72; GT31, p. 50; GT05, p. 75) Hofud has a wet hydrosphere (6) with water covering 62% of its surface. (GT01, p. 72; GT31, p. 50)
Hofud has a moderate-sized population (6) of approximately one milllion.
Hofud is governed by a feudal technocracy (5), with the planetary aristocracy headed by a Commodore, who also holds the Dominate title of Hertug and is advised by a Dominate Governor-General, resident at the capital, Home. Law enforcement is moderate (7) and Hofud is a member of the Sacnoth Dominate.
Hofud has average stellar technological capability (C). (MT5, pp. 26-34) Hofud is a rich, non-industrial, agricultural world. While it has stretched its industrial capabilities in starship production and related technologies like computers and gravitics — which are ubiquitous along the Dyrnwyn Spur and increasingly in the Rim Colonies — Hofud does not substantially produce other manufactured goods for off-world trade. In fact, Hofud imports many industrial products from Sting and Dyrnwyn.
Hofud world map[ᚭ]
The Hofud system's primary star, Freyr, is a yellow dwarf (G6V) which has a red dwarf (M2V) companion star, Skirnir. The system has eight worlds, including a gas giant but no planetoid belt.

Hraðvirk-class fast courier: a 100-ton, tech level C auxiliary (Type X) designed for Dominate Patrol fast courier operations and built at shipyards on Sacnoth, Gram and Hofud. (S07, pp. 8-11; S09, p. 12) These are state-of-the-art ships developed by the Dominate in an effort to improve communication throughout the Sword-Worlds. The first two ships of this class were Huginn, built at Hofud, and Muninn>, built at Gram; the third ship, Hraðvirk, was built at Sacnoth.
Hrefna (Heroni ): world along the coreward spur of the Sepireld frontier main, named for a loved one of a member of the first Dominate expedition to survey the world. (Phill's Canon)
Hrunting (Hrunting ): a Sword World, one of the First Colonies, named for a mythological ancient Old Terran sword. (Phill's Canon) Hrunting is located on the Sword Worlds Main, the first world coreward from Tizon along the Horseshoe.
Hrunting has a routine quality starport (C). It is a medium size (5) world with a standard, oxygen-nitrogen mix atmosphere (6) and a dry hydrosphere (3). Tizon has a moderate-sized population (5) of approximately four hundred thousand, is governed by a feudal technocracy (5) with moderate law enforcement (7) and has early stellar technological capability (9). It is a non-industrial world and a member of the Sacnoth Dominate.
The Hrunting system's only star, Beowulf, is a red dwarf (M2V). The system has ten worlds, including three gas giants and one planetoid belt.

Irresitible Wave blazon[ᛄ]
|
Irresitible Wave: Blazon of Tizon. Derived from the mythological sword of ancient Old Terran legend after which the world is named. The sword Tizón was believed to have been used to drive the wielder's foes into the sea.
Isenfang (AAB entry ; Phill's Canon entry ; Foreven entry ; Jones' MT entry ): a Sword World, one of the Horseshoe Colonies originally settled from Gram, possibly named from Vilani legend. [ᚣ] Isenfang is a medium size (5) world with a standard, tainted (7) and a wet hydrosphere (7). It has a moderate-size population (4) and is governed by a feudal technocracy (5) with high law enforcement (8). Isenfang has a poor quality starport (D) and pre-stellar technological capability (7).

Jarl (Sagamaal): third rank noble title in the Sacnoth Dominate. In most cases, a jarl is the leader of a major subdivision of a world. The holding of a jarl is a jarldømme.
Johanna Hésè & Company: Gram shipbuilder with shipyards at Hansen's Landing starport. Johanna Hésè is the oldest shipbuilder in the Dominate, its origins going back to the first century of the Gram Hegemony and the earliest days of shipbuilding to support colonization of the New Colonies. Johanna Hésè claims it played a key role in development and construction of the Rebirth, the first starship built on Gram, but most historians believe this story to be apocryphal. (GJ0725, "The Sacnoth Dominate"; GT31, p. 9) Nevertheless, Johanna Hésè is one of the most highly regarded and renown shipbuilders in the Dominate, continuing to build notable ships, including the new Admiral Maja II-class galleons.
Joyeuse and surrounding worlds[ᚥ]
|
Joyeuse (AAB entry ; Phill's Canon entry ; Foreven entry ; Jones' MT entry ): a Sword World, named for a ancient Old Terran legendary sword. Joyeuse is one of the First Colonies, originally settled from Gram in 4 F.E. using the Gram's escort starships. (GJ0725, "The Sacnoth Dominate"; GT31, pp. 8, 11)
Joyeuse is located on the Sword Worlds Main, the next world core-spinward from Gram along the Horseshoe toward Colada.
The first of the Sword Worlds to be settled from Gram, its proximity has also meant that Joyeuse has generally remained linked to Gram culturally, economically and politically. For example, like Gram, Joyeuse continues to use pre-Dominate titles for its nobles — though there is currently no universally recognized Commodore — and pre-Dominate ranks for officers in its Home Guard.
Nevertheless — or perhaps precisely because of this — Joyeuse has been chosen to host the Joyeuse Bastion, the first formal Dominate military installation outside the Sacnoth system.
Joyeuse has a routine quality starport (C) at Burgundaven, with unrefined fuel available (from the nearby sea) and starship maintenance facilities able to repair major damage. Though Burgundy enjoys substantial economic prosperity from the starport, the port itself is managed jointly, with all domains provided with unfettered access. There are good quality spaceports, with unrefined fuel and minor repair facilities, at Aachen and Brambleton, and poor quality spaceports, with unrefined fuel but no repair facilities, at Torhold, Ringhold, Hindmount and Edgewater.
Joyeuse is a medium size (5) world with a diameter of 8720 kilometres and surface gravity of 0.68G.[ᚧ] (SMSS) It has a standard, oxygen-nitrogen mix atmosphere (6) and a cool climate, with average temperatures between 11 °C and 21 °C. (GT01, p. 69; GT31, p. 24; GT05, p. 75) Joyeuse has a wet hydrosphere (4) with water covering 44% of its surface but its smaller hydrosphere — and the fact that the bulk of the world's oceans are not in the warmer equatorial regions — reinforces the cool climate. (GT01, p. 69; GT31, p. 39) Only the Eaglewood Sea is free of ice most of the year, though the equatorial coasts of the Hearth and Island Seas are generally ice-free throughout the year. (The Thunder Sea is ice-covered year-round.)
Joyeuse has a moderate-sized population (5) of approximately eight hundred thousand and a balkanized government (7). Joyeuse is divided into seven independent, sovereign domains: the captaincies of Francia, Roncevaux and Burgundy, the commandancies of Neustria and Austrasia and the lieutenantcies of Brunhild and Aquitaine.
Like most of the Sword Worlds, the basic governmental form on Joyeuse is feudal technocracy. Each domain is ruled by a feudal landholder or magnate, each with a variety of subordinate fief-holders tied to them via complex and diverse feudal techno-economic relationships. (An independent and nominally supreme Governor-General administers Dominate affairs from a newly-established Dominate House at Burgundaven.)
In a given domain the chief feudal landholder or magnate exercises supreme executive authority. Local tribunals appointed by the chief landholder or magnate exercise judicial authority, with the degree of independence of these tribunals varying across sovereign domains. Generally, decisions of a tribunal can be appealed to the local feudal landholder or magnate, though the noble decides whether or not the appeal will be considered. In most domains a tricameral assembly known as the Muster exercises legislative authority, though again the degree of independence of this legislative assembly varies from region to region.
Nearly three-quarters of the inhabitants of Joyeuse live in one of seven cities spread across the equatorial region. The area around the Eaglewood Sea is generally the warmest and thus the most populous regions of Joyeuse tend to surround this sea, including the cities of Aachen, on the southwest coast, Burgundaven, the starport, on the western coast, and Hindmount, on the eastern coast. Other areas of principal habitation are the equatorial regions of the larger Hearth and Island Seas, including the cities of Brambleton, on the southwest coast of the Island Sea, Torhold, on the northeast coast of the Hearth Sea, Ringhold, on the northwest coast of the Hearth Sea, and Edgewater, on the north-central coast of the Hearth Sea.
Cities are mostly enclosed structures, offering shelter from the chaotic weather, and most have a substantial underwater component intended to provide access to the nearby sea during the winter. There are no settlements in orbit about Joyeuse and little settlement in the rest of the Joyeuse system. The other minor planets in the primary system, the small satellites of the gas giant and the minor planets in the companion system each have small scientific settlements or highly-automated mining facilities operated by diverse feudal enties on Joyeuse.
Joyeuse has no planetary military forces but each feudal domain maintains its own military forces and para-military constabulary which can even be "confederalized" for planetary defense and, if need be, can be called upon — in theory, no such call has ever been made — by the Dominate government. The Dominate has constructed initial elements of a military base on the second planet, Roland, as a potential staging point for military forces in the Horseshoe.
Joyeuse has moderate law enforcement (7) but this can vary across the different domains which may add some complexity and uncertainty when traveling from one jurisdiction to another. Weapons restrictions are moderate (5), with concealable firearms and radiation weapons prohibited. Trade regulations are moderate (5). Both criminal (5) and civil laws (5) are moderate, typical of the feudal technocracy practiced in the different regions. There are generally moderate restrictions on personal freedoms (5).
Joyeuse has early stellar technological capability (A). Each of the major cities includes a substantial undersea element and high-tech submersible transport is as ubiquitous as gravitics transport is in the air. An ultra-high-speed, high-capacity freight and passenger monorail system connects each of the major cities in the equatorial region.
Local technology achievement on Joyeuse includes fusion power for energy generation, early synaptic computer and robotics systems, voice and text transcription and holovision and extensive satellite communications systems. Local medical capabilities include antiviral vaccination, wide-scale cancer cures and growth quickening. Beside the undersea elements of most major cities there are also under-ice habitations in the Hearth and Island Seas. Advanced gravitic vehicles are ubiquitous for land, water and air transportation. Though there are no starship yards on Joyeuse the local starport is fully capable of conducting major maintenance and repairs on jump drives and gravitic maneuver drives. Local weapons manufacturers produce advanced combat rifles, reflective armor and combat environment suits. Plasma guns, crystaliron armor and repulsors are produced by heavy weapons manufacturers. Some areas of Joyeuse have only been superficially explored. (MT5, p. 34)
Joyeuse is a non-industrial, agricultural world and a member of the Sacnoth Dominate. A variety of higher-tech novelty items are imported from Gram and, occasionally from Sacnoth.
Joyeuse world map[ᚤ]
The Joyeuse system's primary star, Karl, is a red dwarf (M3V) which has a red dwarf (M9V) companion star, Gallas, orbiting at 640 light-minutes (Orbit 10). The system has fourteen worlds, including a small gas giant, Fierabras, orbiting Karl at eight light-minutes (Orbit 3), and no planetoid belt.
There are six small worlds which orbit between Joyeuse and the gas giant. A Dominate military base is under development on Roland, the next world out (just inside the 100-diameter limit of Karl). The third world, Oliver, has a commercial research facility. The next two worlds, Floripas and Gui, are very small vacuum worlds each also with a commercial research facility. The next two worlds out, Matilda and Bradamante, have no permanent facilities. There are two empty orbits between Fierabras and the companion star, Gallas, orbiting in Karl's outer system.
Four small worlds orbit the companion star, Galas, which has no habitable zone. Closest to the star is Turpin, a very small vacuum world with a commercial research facility. The next two worlds out, Aude and Berengier, have no permanent facilities. The most distant world, Ogier, is a small vacuum world which also hosts a commercial research facility.
Joyeuse orbits Karl at just 30 light-seconds, at the innermost edge of the star's habitable zone, and has no moon but a single ring, "La Couronne," orbits at two planetary radii. (GT31, p. 24) Joyeuse is not tidally-locked but has a 3:2 spin-orbit resonance, orbiting in Karl in twelve standard days. (GT31, p. 39)
The short orbital period of Joyeuse and spin-orbit resonance result in two short, stark seasons: a very hot "daysummer" of constant sunlight (when average temperatures can reach 45 °C), and a very cold "nightwinter" of constant darkness (when average temperatures can reach -45 °C). (GT31, p. 39) The short seasons — each just over twelve standard days — moderate some of the temperature extremes but also result in chaotic weather in the "spring" and "fall" transitions, especially in what would otherwise be the temperate regions, and have limited the effectiveness of weather control on Joyeuse. (GT31, p. 39) Temperatures only reach reliably above the freezing point of water year round in the equatorial regions. (Temperatures in the world's extensive polar regions are generaly below the freezing point of water year round.)
The meteorological turmoil has encouraged undersea aquaculture on Joyeuse. The cold climate means there is little opportunity for land-based agriculture or large-scale animal husbandry but there is extensive processing of aquaculture foodstuffs and organics for off-world export. Joyeuse is also rich in ores and mining operations extend across the world's surface, even into the polar regions — though mining operations away from the equatorial regions are largely automated. Joyeuse produces few manufactured goods for export — and, indeed, imports many manufactured goods — but exports a fair amount of information associated with agriculture and resource extraction efforts.
Joyeuse Bastion: Dominate military base established on the next planet out from Joyeuse in the Joyeuse system in an effort to protect the worlds of the Horseshoe from potential attack by the Darrians.[ᚨ] (GT31, p. 41) Many in the Horseshoe believe the base is instead intended to consolidate Dominate control of Gram and the First Colonies and the Horseshoe Colonies.
Joyeuse-class corvette: a 1200-ton, tech level B (Type BC) escort designed for regular naval operations and built at shipyards on Gram. (B05, 2nd. ed., pp. 51-52; A01, pp. 10-11, 14-37; S09, p. 19) An older class of ships decommissioned by the Dominate after the Sacnoth-Gram War in accordance with the Von Reuter Provisos, Joyeuse-class corvettes sometimes led private Exploring Expeditions. Narsil and surrounding worlds[ᚷ]
|
Narsil (AAB entry ; Phill's Canon entry ; Foreven entry ; Jones' MT entry ): a Sword World, one of the Far Colonies, named for an ancient Old Terran fictional sword.
Narsil is located on the Sword Worlds Main, the last world of the Far Leg, rim-spinward from Anduril.
One of the Sword Worlds settled from Sacnoth, Narsil remains linked to Sacnoth culturally, economically and politically, especially due to its relatively remote location at the end of the Far Leg and its proximity to the Darrian Cluster. Indeed, Narsil is closer to the Darrian homeworld than it is to either Sacnoth or Gram.
Narsil has a good quality starport (B) with refined fuel available, starship maintenance facilities able to repair any damage and shipyards capable of constructing non-starships. There are no orbital facilities but a substantial downport exists at Outreach.
Narsil is a medium size (5) world with a diameter of 7689 kilometres and surface gravity of 0.27G. (GT01, p. 68; GT31, p. 24) It has a standard, oxygen-nitrogen atmosphere (6) and a normal/cool climate — the world's high orbital eccentricty takes it into the outer region of its star's habitable zone — with average temperatures between 16 °C and 26 °C. (GT01, p. 68; GT31, pp. 24, 29; GT05, p. 75) Narsil has a wet hydrosphere (4) with water covering 38% of its surface. (GT31, p. 24)
Narsil has a moderate-size population (5) of approximately two hundred thousand, living in small settlements scattered across the mostly ice-covered northern and southern hemispheres, though the city of Whiteclad has grown since the Dominate established the capital there.
Narsil is governed by a feudal technocracy (5) with a planetary Hertugdømme originally established by the Dominate. A Governor-General administers Dominate affairs from Dominate House at Whiteclad. Law enforcement is generally moderate (7) though it can vary rather widely across the world's many domains.
Narsil has early stellar technological capability (A), among the highest in the Sword Worlds outside of Sacnoth, Gram and Hofud. Some areas of Narsil have only been superficially explored. (MT5, p. 34) It is an agricultural and non-industrial world and a member of the Sacnoth Dominate.
Narsil world map[ᚸ]
Narsil's primary star, Isildur, is a yellow subgiant (G6IV) that is orbited by a red dwarf secondary, Elendil (M0V). (GT31, p. 24) The system has ten worlds, including four gas giants and two planetoid belts.
Narsil orbits Isildur at slightly over 13 light-hours, within a highly eccentric orbit that nevertheless remains within the star's habitable zone. (GT31, pp. 24, 29) The world has no moon. (GT31, p. 24)
Naval Guard Starlines: commercial shipping holding on Gram. Naval Guard provides passenger and freight service mostly to worlds along the Horseshoe, as well as direct service between Gram, Sacnoth and Hofud — most recently launching new service with the Admiral Maja II-class galleons. One of the oldest shipping holdings in the Dominate, Naval Guard traces its origins to the original Gram escorts used to explore and settle the First Colonies. (GJ0725, "The Sacnoth Dominate"; GT31, p. 9) See Venetian Lines.

(B03, 2nd ed., p. 16; TB, p. 83) Non-agricultural worlds have a population of less than ten million. (B02, 1st ed., p. 43, and 2nd ed., p. 46; B03, 2nd. ed., p. 16; TB, p. 83; B06, p. 32; MT2, pp. 48, 50)
North Edge Sea: northernmost of two large, interior seas of the Soleland continent on Excalibur, located in the southern hemisphere south of the Ark Sea. (Called "Sarghav" — Sagamaal for "Marsh Sea" — in the Classic Traveller era; GT31, map, p. 53)

(101 Starships, pp. 66, 381)[ᚢ] Named after an ancient Terran monarch's longship, and second of that name; the first was a 5000-ton destroyer (Type FE) smashed in an heroic battle against Sacnoth forces in 212 F.E. (GJ0725, "The Sacnoth Dominate"; S09, p. 18, C25, pp. 18-20)
In accordance with the armistice which ended hostilities between Gram and Sacnoth, the Ormen Hin Lange does not have an active jump drive — though the seemingly over-powered ship was constructed with many essential jump drive components built into the hull. (Some Dominate critics suspect that the Space Self-Defence Force has secretly prepared to quickly retrofit the remaining required jump drive components, though no evidence of such an effort has been produced.)
Outer Ocean: the world ocean on Anduril. That portion of the Ocean which separates the world's two large continents, Forestmarch and Greatland, is called the Inland Sea. (Called "Ytrishav" — Sagamaal for "Outer Oceans" — in the Classic Traveller era; GT31, map, p. 35)

In ancient Old Terran mythology the lindwyrm was a mythological dragon or giant, winged serpent. The Red Wyrm has often been described by Gram's political foes on Sacnoth as a "monster that lies on a bed of gold and can only be killed by a [special] bull," emphasizing the creature's monstrousness and treasure-hoarding — and its susceptibility to being overcome by Sacnoth's own symbolic creature. Sacho (Flexos ): world along the spinward trace of the Pilgrim frontier, named for a legendary ancient Old Terran sword. (HRM980630; Phill's Canon)
Sacnoth and surrounding worlds[ᚬ]
|
Sacnoth (AAB entry ; Phill's Canon entry ; Foreven entry ; Higginbotham's TML entry): a Sword World, one of the New Colonies and capital of the Sacnoth Dominate. Originally named "Balisarda" when its colonization was planned by Gram, Sacnoth was renamed by its early colonists for a fictional ancient Old Terran sword.
Sacnoth is located on the Sword Worlds Main, the next world rimward from Tyrfing along the Far Leg and spin-trailward from Beater on the Dyrnwyn Spur.
Sacnoth was the source of the original settlement of the Far Colonies and the Rim Colonies prior to the Unshackling and its leadership of the Dominate.
Sacnoth is one of the most populous and technologically-advanced worlds in the Dominate and its cultural, economic and political influence is apparent throughout the Sword Worlds, especially among the worlds of the Far Leg and in the Rim Colonies.
Sacnoth has an excellent quality starport (A) with plentiful refined fuel and extensive shipyards offering starship repair and maintenance and also able to build the most sophisticated starships in the Dominate. There are both orbital and ground components of the starport at Istrakhan.
Sacnoth is a medium size (7) world with a diameter of 11,540 kilometres and surface gravity of 0.98G. (GT01, p. 70; GT31, p. 50) It has a standard, oxygen-nitrogen mix atmosphere (6) and normal climate, with average temperatures between 22 °C and 29 °C. (GT01, p. 70; GT31, p. 50; GT05, p. 75) Sacnoth has a wet hydrosphere (5) with water covering 50% of its surface. (GT01, p. 70; GT31, p. 50)
Sacnoth has a moderate-sized population (6) of approximately two million.
Sacnoth is governed by a self-perpetuating oligarchy (5), with a hereditary aristocracy headed by a planetary monarch, the Kongerinde, who is also the Kejserinde of the Sacnoth Dominate. Law enforcement is moderate (7). Sacnoth is the capital of the Sacnoth Dominate.
Sacnoth has average stellar technological capability (C) with fusion and advanced fuel cells; Model/6 computers and low autonomous robots; real-time multilingual translators; broad-spectrum antitoxins and enhanced prosthetics; major terraforming and advanced weather control; personal grav belts and light gravitic modules; jump-3 starships; portable plasma guns and Gauss rifles, fusion guns, superdense armor and nuclear dampers; and jump-4 starship prototypes. (MT5, pp. 26-34)
Sacnoth is a rich, non-industrial, agricultural world. While it has stretched its industrial capabilities in starship production and related technologies like computers and gravitics — which are ubiquitous along the Far Leg and increasingly throughout the Dominate — Sacnoth does not substantially produce other manufactured goods for off-world trade. Many industrial products from Anduril, Narsil and Sting are instead imported by Sacnoth.
Sacnoth world map[ᚭ]
The Sacnoth system's primary star, Leótrískt, is a yellow-white dwarf (F9V) which has a red dwarf (M3V) companion star, Tharagavverug. The system has seven worlds, including one gas giant, and no planetoid belt.
Sacnoth orbits Leótrískt at 15 light-minutes, in the outer portion of the star's habitable zone, and has two large moons, Hvæssesten Øje and Sværdgrebets Øje. (GT31, p. 50)
Sacnoth Dominate (Sagamaal: Sacnoth Dominatet): interstellar government established in 1 F.E., with capital at Sacnoth. The Dominate's governance of the twenty Sword Worlds is more formal and unambiguous than was that of the Gram Hegemony which preceded it. Generally, the Dominate leaves individual Sword Worlds free to govern themselves as they desire, provided that ultimate power is always accorded the Dominate. For example, the Dominate Kejser is formally also the Konge of each world but, in practice, the Konge is represented by a Dominate Governor-General who administers Dominate affairs on the world while leaving day-to-day governance to the local nobility.

Sting is located on the Sword Worlds Main, the second of the Rim Stars, rimward from Hofud, rim-trailward from Beater and coreward from Biter.
Originally settled from Sacnoth, Sting remains linked to Sacnoth culturally, economically and politically. More recently, as the influence of Hofud has grown in the Rim Colonies, its influence has been most pronounced on Sting, not only due to its proximity but also in an effort by Sting to assert its autonomy within the Sacnoth Dominate.
Sting has a good quality starport (B) with refined fuel available, starship maintenance facilities able to repair any damage and shipyards capable of constructing non-starships. There are no orbital facilities but a substantial downport exists at Greyhaven: The capital city of Anduril, named for an ancient Old Terran legendary place related to the sword Anduril. (Called "Graahavne," in the Classic Traveller era; GT31, pp. 34, 35)

(GT01, p. 68; GT31, p. 24) It has a dense, oxygen-nitrogen mix atmosphere (8) and a cold climate with average temperatures between -12 °C and -1 °C, but the moderating effect of Mar Separador, the single world ocean, serves to keep the equatorial regions generally free of ice. (GT01, p. 68; GT31, p. 24; GT05, p. 75) Tizon has a wet hydrosphere (6) with water covering 61% of its surface. (GT01, p. 68; GT31, p. 24)
Tizon has a moderate-sized population (5) of approximately three hundred thousand, is governed, like most Sword Worlds, by a feudal technocracy (5) with moderate law enforcement (7) which can vary across the many, mostly mining-centred holdings across the world's surface and ocean floor. (GT01, p. 68; GT31, p. 24) A Governor-General administers Dominate affairs from Dominate House at La Capital.
Tizon has early stellar technological capability (9). It is a non-industrial, agricultural world and a member of the Sacnoth Dominate.
Tizon world map[ᚼ]
The Tizon system's primary star, El Cid, is an orange subgiant (K2IV) which has a red dwarf (M3V) companion star, Bucar. The system has fifteen worlds, including three gas giants and two planetoid belts. A small gas giant occupies the next orbit out from Tizon. (GT31, p. 27)
Tizon orbits El Cid at over 16 light-minutes, within the star's habitable zone. (GT31, pp. 24, 27) The world has two small moons, neither with any permanent settlements. (GT01, p. 68; GT31, pp. 24)

trader (ship or boat): a freighter or liner of at least 200 tons displacement but less than 400 tons.
Trailing frontier: original name of the Sepireld frontier, before it was surveyed by the Dominate.
Tranchera (Tarkine ): world along the rimward trace of the Pilgrim frontier, named for a legendary ancient Old Terran sword. (HRM980630; Phill's Canon)
Tres Penínsulas: Northern polar continent on Tizon. The world's capital, La Capital, is located on the southern tip of the "middle peninsula." (Called "Treskaganir" — Sagamaal for "three peninsulas" — in the Classic Traveller era; GT31, p. 27)
Treflughting[ᛈ]
|
Treflughting: The primitive non-human sophonts native to the Darrian world Tĭrẏugḣ. Treflughting are an aquatic, air-breathing, viviparous people who have rarely been encountered by Sword Worlders and, likely due to their complex artificial life-support needs, never off their homeworld. (GT01, p. 49)
Triumph-class brigantine: a 600-ton, tech level B (Type EF) corvette designed for regular naval operations and built at shipyards on Gram. (ACS2, pp. 11) An older class of ships decommissioned by the Dominate after the Sacnoth-Gram War in accordance with the Von Reuter Provisos, Triumph-class brigantines participated in some private Exploring Expeditions. See Rykke-class brigantine and Shiva-class brigantine.
Trojansprings: industrial lieutenancy on Haulteclere, involved primarily in resource extraction aimed at providing inputs to food production and artificial life suppport activities. Vassal to Fairharvest.
Tyrfing and surrounding worlds[ᚮ]
|
Tyrfing (AAB entry ; Phill's Canon entry ; Foreven entry ): a Sword World, the first of the New Colonies to be settled from Gram. (GJ0725, "The Sacnoth Dominate"; GT31, pp. 9, 11) Tyrfing is named for a ancient Old Terran mythological sword.
Located on the Sword Worlds Main, Tyrfing is rim-trailward from Gram, the first world along the Far Leg, coreward from Sacnoth and spin-coreward from Beater on the Dyrnwyn Spur.
Located between Gram and Sacnoth, Tyrfing has had to learn to balance the cultural, economic and political influences of both of these larger and more powerful worlds. Under the Dominate it has grown increasingly aligned with Sacnoth, including adopting Dominate ranks for its nobility and Dominate naval and army ranks for its Home Guard.
Tyrfing has a routine quality starport (C) at Brackishby, with unrefined fuel available (from the nearby sea) and starship maintenance facilities able to repair major damage.
Tyrfing is a medium size (6) world with a diameter of 9822 kilometres and surface gravity of 0.77G. (GT01, p. 70; GT31, p. 50) It has a very thin, oxygen-nitrogen mix atmosphere (3), which requires a respirator for breathing, and a normal climate — at least in the twilight zone — with average temperatures between 22 °C and 29 °C. (GT01, p. 70; GT31, p. 50; GT05, p. 75) Tyrfing has a wet hydrosphere (7) with water covering 72% of its surface which moderates the global temperature extremes in the twilight zone. (GT01, p. 70; GT31, pp. 50, 54)
Tyrfing has a moderate-sized population (5) of approximately one hundred thousand, most of which is concentrated in the world's north polar region, around the capital city Munarvag, southeast of the starport. (Most of the world's twilight zone is ocean, including the south polar region.)
Like most of the Sword Worlds, the basic governmental form on Tyrfing is feudal technocracy (5). Each domain is ruled by a feudal landholder or magnate, each with a variety of subordinate fief-holders tied to them via complex and diverse feudal techno-economic relationships. (An independent Governor-General administers Dominate affairs from Dominate House at Munarvag.)
Tyrfing has moderate law enforcement (7) which is fairly uniform given the concentration of most of the world's population in the north polar region.
Tyrfing has pre-stellar technological capability (8). Some areas of Tyrfing have only been superficially explored. (MT5, p. 34) It is a non-industrial world and a member of the Sacnoth Dominate.
Tyrfing world map[ᚯ]
The Tyrfing system's only star, Angantyr, is a red dwarf (M2V). (GT31, p. 50) The system has six worlds, including one gas giant and no planetoid belt.
Tyrfing orbits Angantyr at just 40 light-seconds, comfortably within the star's habitable zone but also the source of its tidally-locked circumstances. (GT31, p. 50) The world has no moon. (GT31, p. 50)
