A History of the Terran Federation
A series of monographs for the Terro-human History Project

Introduction
The Terran Federation came into existence on July 21st in the 31st year of the Atomic Era (AE) at the city of New York, a metropolis which existed at the time on the eastern coast of the North American continent of Terra. That this date is different from the date of both the Federation Day holiday (June 11th) and the erstwhile Unification Day holiday (March 12th) celebrated throughout the former Federation attests to the complex history of this single greatest political, economic and social entity in the history of Terro-human civilization. From the pact signed that day by a collection of regional sovereignties on Terra to the day nearly thirteen centuries later (Oct. 3rd, 1276 AE) when the last Federation President, Elisabet Stauber, was deposed by Admiral Otto Ward, Tyrant of Uller, Terro-humans spread out from a single world to form an interstellar civilization spanning more than 350 star systems.

First Century (31 - 130 AE)
At the dawn of the Atomic Era, Terra was divided into over fifty independent regional sovereignties which often warred with one and another. Indeed, the Atomic Era began when physicists from one of these regional sovereignties, the United States, produced the first sustained nuclear reaction. The United States quickly used this capability to produce the first atomic weapons which it used to secure victory in the ongoing Second World War. Even before the War was over the victorious "Allies" had split into two adversarial blocs, one led by the United States (located on the North American continent and known colloquially as "America") and the other led by the Soviet Union (located on the Eurasian continent and known colloquially as "Russia"). Near the end of the War, the increasingly adversarial Allies created an international organization, the United Nations (UN), governed by the leading regional sovereignties among the War victors, which was intended to reduce conflict among regional sovereignties. The organization was largely ineffective at this task but nevertheless conflict between the two blocs of adversaries was limited to various non-nuclear battles between their proxies as relative parity in atomic capabilities deterred America and Russia themselves from direct warfare.

The "First" Federation and the Thirty Days' War
The Terran Federation was formed in 31 AE by a collection of these regional sovereignties lead by the United States, one of the two major regional sovereignties which dominated Terra at the time. The United States had recently established a military base on Terra's moon, Luna. The other major regional sovereignty, the Soviet Union, opposed the American moonbase and along with its allies. . . .
